Description: Jared Diamond is the author of Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed and Guns, Germs, and Steel, which was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1998. A professor of geography at UCLA, he has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He is a MacArthur Fellow and was awarded the National Medal of Science. Australian paleontologist John A. Long is the recently appointed vice president of research and collections at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Long previously served as Head of Sciences for the Museum Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, and has been actively engaged in research on the early evolution of fish and dinosaurs. In 2001 Dr. Long won the Eureka Prize for the Public Promotion of Science.
